Silverchair se formó en 1992 en Newcastle, Australia, por tres amigos de la secundaria: el guitarrista/cantante Daniel Johns, el bajista Chris Joannou, y el baterista Ben Gillies. Originalmente llamados Innocent Criminals llegaron a la fama más por su edad que por su musica; cuando lanzaron Frogstomp tenían 15 años.En 1994, su demo fue elegido como el ganador entre 800 competidores en un concurso de talentos australiano conducido por Nomad, un show de música australiana, y una estación de radio local, 2JJJ-FM. Incluido en el premio había un día de grabación en el estudio de la radio, y también un video para la canción ganadora, 'Tomorrow'. La radio y Nomad comenzaron a pasar el video antes de que los Innocent Criminals firmaran un contrato de grabación, lo que les permitió conseguir muchos fans. Esto también provocó una guerra entre los sellos australianos, y ya para fines de año tenían un contrato con Murmur, una subsidiaria de Sony.
Antes del lanzamiento de su simple debut (Tomorrow), en Septiembre de 1994, la banda se cambió el nombre a Silverchair; el nombre derivaba del tema “Sliver” de Nirvana (al que accidentalmente le cambiaron de lugar dos letras, convirtiéndolo en “Silver”) y el tema “Berlin Chair” de You Am I.
